Trainee Sleep Technologist

Prana Health is seeking a motivated Trainee Sleep Technologist to join our growing team in Fayetteville, NC. This role is ideal for candidates enrolled in the AASM Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (ASTEP) who want hands-on training in polysomnography, CPAP/BiPAP therapy, and sleep study procedures under the supervision of experienced RPSGTs. Trainees will follow a structured learning path with opportunities for certification and career growth in sleep medicine.

Job Summary

This position is ideal for candidates who are currently enrolled in the AASM Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (ASTEP) and looking to gain hands-on experience in polysomnography, CPAP therapy, and sleep study procedures. Trainees will work under the direct supervision of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGTs) and Providers, receiving structured training to develop the skills needed for certification and licensure. A trainee contract will be required to ensure commitment to the training process.

Key Responsibilities

Sleep Study Training & Monitoring

  • Assist in the setup, calibration, and operation of polysomnography (PSG) equipment for diagnostic sleep studies.
  • Observe and assist in conducting PSG diagnostics, CPAP/BiPAP titration, home sleep apnea testing (HSAT), multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT), maintenance of wakefulness tests (MWT), and PAP-NAP procedures.
  • Learn to recognize and document sleep-related events such as apneas, hypopneas, desaturation events, and periodic limb movements.
  • Assist in monitoring EEG, EKG, EMG, airflow, oxygen saturation, and respiratory effort under supervision.
  • Shadow experienced Sleep Technologists to learn proper scoring of sleep studies and documentation for Providers’ review.

Patient Interaction & Education

  • Assist in preparing patients for sleep studies, including proper placement of electrodes and sensors.
  • Learn to educate patients about sleep disorders, CPAP/BiPAP therapy, and proper mask fitting.
  • Address basic patient concerns and escalate more complex issues to supervising technologists.
  • Develop skills to provide empathetic and professional patient care during overnight studies.

Equipment & Compliance Training

  • Assist in cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining sleep study equipment per OSHA and AASM guidelines.
  • Learn to properly document test results, compliance data, and procedural notes in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Follow HIPAA and patient confidentiality regulations to protect sensitive health information.
  • Ensure all protocols and checklists are strictly followed without deviation.

Administrative & Operational Duties

  • Help with sorting and organizing referrals, prior authorizations, and insurance verifications to ensure smooth scheduling of sleep studies.
  • Assist in managing DME orders, CPAP follow-ups, and patient compliance monitoring.
  • Support billing and documentation processes by ensuring accurate records for insurance claims and compliance reporting.
  • Follow the chain of command for reporting concerns or operational issues.

Training & Certification Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in the ASTEP (AASM Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program).
  • Commitment to obtaining RPSGT certification within the required timeframe.
  • Must sign a Trainee Contract, agreeing to complete the training program and meet performance expectations.

Qualifications & Skills

  • College coursework in healthcare, biology, or respiratory therapy preferred.
  • Strong interest in sleep medicine, polysomnography, and patient care.
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to follow protocols.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and patient-centered approach.
  • Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn EHR systems and sleep study software.
  • Ability to work overnight shifts and commit to the structured training program.

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Full-time (12-hour shifts x 3 days) or part-time trainee position with a structured learning path.
  • Overnight shifts required for in-lab sleep studies, along with some daytime training sessions.
  • Must be willing to rotate between Fayetteville and Sanford locations as scheduled by management.
