Dr Rahul Kakkar is board certified in the areas of sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and obesity medicine. For many patients, these areas intersect and overlap, with one health concern worsening or even causing another. With expertise in all of these areas, Dr. Kakkar is uniquely positioned to help his patients achieve their best possible health. He has a particular interest in working with children, and with veterans and soldiers.

Dr. Kakkar began his career in medicine at the Indira Gandhi Medical College in India, and then went on to complete a residency in Anesthesiology at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh. He furthered his experience at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Dr. Kakkar moved to the United States in 1995, where he continued to study Internal Medicine and then completed Fellowships in Pulmonary Medicine, Sleep Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
Throughout his years of specialized work at the University of Florida, the University of Michigan, and in private practices in Florida and North Carolina, he has found that when patients find relief from breathing disorders and sleep disturbances, many other aspects of their health improve.
His passionate interest in the impact of a good night's sleep on the overall health of the patient, has led Dr. Kakkar to frequently publish articles, chapters, and give talks about the importance of sleep as well as the treatment of Sleep Apnea, one of the most common sleep disorders in the United States, which has dramatic and deleterious effects on the patient’s health when left untreated.
He has particular experience treating both children who are struggling with sleep and breathing disorders, as well as veterans who are struggling with the symptoms of PTSD.
He has won the Champions Award from the Veterans Administration, the Best Sleep Doctors award from Sleep Review Magazine in 2013, and has special experience in handling the particular intersection of sleep disorders in soldiers and veterans.
Dr. Kakkar is certified by American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Sleep Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
He is also Certified by National Board of Physicians and Surgeons in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Sleep Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Kakkar is certified by American Board of Obesity Medicine in Obesity Medicine.

Dr. Kakkar is also a member of the Fact Sheet Sub-Committee through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Vice President of the Narcolepsy Network, and also serves as Chairman of the Research Committee and as a member of the Board of Trustees for the same organization.
He also maintains ongoing research in collaboration with the University of Michigan, the University of Toronto, and the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine.
Dr. Kakkar is Co-chair, Narcolepsy Perioperative study group.
